Vanaf 1 september 2011 heeft elke diëtist de wettelijke bevoegdheid om patiënten en cliënten te behandelen zonder een verwijzing van een arts. Zorgverzekeraars kunnen ervoor kiezen om de behandeling van de diëtist uitsluitend te vergoeden als er wel een verwijzing is of eisen dat je de aantekening ‘direct toegankelijk’ (dt) hebt in het Kwaliteitsregister Paramedici (KP). Diëtisten die na 1 juli 2012 zijn afgestudeerd ontvangen automatisch deze aantekening in het KP, omdat directe toegankelijkheid onderdeel is van de initiële opleiding. Diëtisten die voor 2012 zijn afgestudeerd dienen een cursus te volgen om in aanmerking te komen voor de aantekening dt in het KP.

HAN VDO heeft deze cursus DTD sinds 2010 aangeboden. Inmiddels hebben verreweg de meeste diëtisten de aantekening. Omdat het animo hiervoor logischerwijs afneemt overweegt HAN VDO de cursus definitief te stoppen.
